After my first try at messing around with smoke photography, I set up an incense stick, in a similar position to the original experiment, and tried to use light bleed in an artistic way. here are two images, the top one is original and the bottom one has been developed. more images can be found here.

In this image, I found the light bleed useful and could use it within the image.
